Advanced Skills Coordinator
As the Advanced Skills Coordinator in the Manufacturing Training Department, Juan’s primary responsibility is running and developing curriculum for the Careers in Manufacturing Program (CMP). Since 2007, Juan has taken the program from a 2-cycle, 14 week class per year to an open entry / open exit all year program where new students are added monthly and taught in a shop environment not only by Juan, but by the students that have been in training for several weeks. The ability to emphasize hands-on training along with the theory makes teaching fun for Juan and his students. Nationally recognized certifications from NIMS were also implemented as part of the program to validate the training that students have taken and make them more marketable to employers. Juan’s philosophy on training is based on the whole person, and not just the technical aspects of the class. “Attendance, Attitude, and Ability” is the motto in the shop.
Prior to JARC, Juan implemented and ran the Manufacturing Training Department for the Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps from 2003 to 2007, which became a model program that was recognized by the Department of Labor and implemented at 3 other Job Corps Centers in the country.
Juan has a machining background in CNC operations and programming and has worked in the field for over 10 years.
