esby Supports Local Designers' Creative Explorations

The esby space at 4222 N. Honore is a creative incubator for local designers Jim Doan, Linda Pulik, and Donna Piacenza. The three sought an opportunity to design by hand - a departure from the world of industrial design that they all inhabit. Their shop is a place for design exploration in several mediums including wood, concrete, and metals to name a few. Each designer uses the space as a way to visualize and create products that offer a handmade quality expressed through a modern design aesthetic. Diverse projects such as clocks, furniture, jewelry and vases fuel an energetic design practice that produces refreshing ideas and forms continuously.

esby features the work from designer and craftsman Jim Doan. Jim entirely handcrafts each of his pieces at the Honore building. His clocks, bowls and other projects exhibit an appreciation for craft through material, form and execution. The abstracted botanical forms of his Sarah Clock are unmistakable. It was inspired not only by the natural forms of plants, but also their movement. Equally matched in execution and design is his Lien bowl. He lathes these beautiful vessels from solid hardwood and inlays its anodized aluminum base.

Jim's designs are catching the eye of the design community. His work is being sold across the country at modern design stores and is gaining recognition. The Sarah Clock so impressed the producers of HGTV that they featured it on the show "I Want That!". Recently, Chicago Magazine featured the Sarah Clock in their Home edition which showcases inspired design.

Studio members Linda Pulik and Donna Piacenza recently collaborated on designing a public recycling bin for the City of Chicago. Their design was selected for exhibition last fall at Daley Plaza. JARC has commissioned further development of the bin and is currently producing a working prototype in collaboration with D&J Metalcraft, another JARC tenant in the Ravenswood industrial corridor. The bins will be used in nearby JARC buildings with the hope that more will be produced for other locations in Chicago.

While Linda explores her ideas through furniture and household accessories, Donna's jewelry, like the Plya bracelet and other products provoke audiences to challenge assumptions about everyday objects. Donna's work can be viewed at www.studio1am.com. Through a diverse mix of materials, methods and concepts, the studio members at esby share a common goal: to inspire creativity through the sharing of ideas, skilled craftsmanship and distinct works.
