Become a tutor for JARC's Adult Learners Program Services (ALPS) and help change a life! No prior experience is necessary; we will train you, provide materials, and support your tutoring. Our students are very easy to work with and dedicated to improving themselves through education. The tutoring sessions are guided by each student's goals and progress is measured through periodic testing.
Benefits of Tutoring
You will be able to create a strong relationship with your students, receive the satisfaction of knowing that you have had a positive impact on their lives, and help them gain the skills they need to make productive changes in their lives, for themselves and for their families.
Time Commitment
We provide one-on-one tutoring for adult learners on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm right in the comfort and convenience of the JARC offices. Tutoring sessions typically involve helping people work on their reading or basic math skills or helping people work towards the GED. We ask our volunteers to commit to at least one of those days; everyone is welcome to attend both.
Tutor Training
We offer tutor training for our volunteers so that they can be as effective as possible with their time at JARC. All tutors must be trained at least 12 hours per year. We work in collaboration with an organization called Literacy Works, which trains our tutors.
Training sessions are free and take place over two Saturdays from 10am - 4pm at the Lakefront Supportive Housing/Harold Washington Building, 4946 N. Sheridan Rd.
If you are not able to attend on Saturdays, there may be other training opportunities offered on-site by our Adult Learners Program Services Director.
